James T Blakeman & Co - spiral freezing system for sausages and meatballs
Blakeman’s is one of Europe’s leading meat manufacturers, producing sausage and meat products for the catering and ready meal market. The company recently built a 40,000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Staffordshire, which produces 12000 tonnes of production a year and has an annual turnover of around £12m.
The food processor was looking develop its meat product range & increase flexibility of the processing line to keep pace with the changing demand of its customer base.
Starfrost designed, manufactured and installed a Glacier system for Blakeman’s, combining IQF Spiral Freezer technology and a unique low volume ammonia refrigeration plant in one complete package.
The Glacier pack included a Helix Spiral Freezer with a processing capacity of 900 kg per hour of sausages, featuring a stainless steel dual conveyor belt around a single rotating drum, with 14 spiraling tiers on each belt, 28 tiers in total.
Blakeman’s Spiral Freezer features a ‘Clean in Place’ system; its unique design enables the process to be a repeatable, cost effective means of cleaning and sanitising the equipment.
A previously existing freezer and refrigeration plant were removed from the site before installation. Starfrost worked alongside the food manufacturer to ensure a smooth and efficient operation with minimal downtime.
The Glacier Spiral System is operating successfully, enabling Blakeman’s to reduce maintenance and maximise product flexibility.
Blakeman’s Helix is designed with a dual twin belt; this allows the customer to process various products simultaneously, giving increased flexibility to the processing line.
In addition, the belt features side guards to ensure product segregation and prevent product rolling, ideally suited for Blakeman’s products of sausages and meatballs.
